About Young Americans Day™

Young Americans Day™ — April 19 is a national civic and community celebration honoring America’s young people and recognizing the important role they play in the future of the United States.

The observance is inspired by a 1960 congressional proposal that called for April 19 to be proclaimed annually as “Young Americans’ Day.” By renewing that vision today, Young Americans Day™ connects a historic recognition of America’s youth with a modern nationwide celebration of their talents, achievements, creativity, leadership, and potential.

Young Americans Day™ is more than a commemorative date. It is an opportunity for families, schools, communities, businesses, youth organizations, entertainment organizations, civic leaders, and other supporters to create meaningful experiences for young people.

On April 19, families may celebrate in their own special way—sharing a meal together, going to a movie, visiting a museum or amusement park, taking a bike ride, enjoying a park, playing sports or games, attending a community event, or simply spending meaningful time with the young people in their lives.

Schools and youth organizations can recognize student accomplishments, host leadership and educational programs, organize performances, contests, workshops, service activities, and other programs that encourage young people to participate, create, learn, and lead.

Businesses and community organizations can also participate by hosting family activities, supporting youth programs, sponsoring community celebrations, providing educational opportunities, and helping make Young Americans Day™ a memorable experience for young people throughout the country.
